I found a really inspiring cookbook this week. “Wholefood” by Jude Blereau.
Jude explains her philosophy on food – what actually represents good food and how we should cook it and eat it. She doesn’t spend a lot of time in the explanation, yet her message is profound, and rang true with me straight away. Here is a no-nonsense approach to food that isn’t based on any fad, religion, hype or so-called “diet”. It’s about having a healthy relationship with our bodies, and thinking about what we put inside them.
Jude explains how the book works, “Labelling a diet, be it vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free, is no guarantee that that it is healthy. Wholefood cooking is a broader perspective that acknowledges the integrity of food, the basic rule being that, the more food is refined and processed, the more its integrity and its inherent ability to nourish are lost.” She goes on to say “Good food starts in a field’s rich soil: farmed sustainably, in harmony with nature, without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, and without genetic engineering”.
The book contains a few chicken and meat dishes, but is predominantly vegetarian (a woman who actually understands healthy eating!) and includes chapters on breakfast, beans and legumes, soy, grains, salads, vegetable soups and stews, vegetable dishes, cakes and desserts – and a listing for the wholefood pantry to see you get started on the right track.
The book is just perfect for us right now. After the diabolical French bread and cheese consumption, we are making a prime effort to consume only wholefood – and less of it!!
I’m already inspired by its content – I made some fantastic wholewheat blueberry pancakes for breakfast today – I admit not the most difficult recipe in the book, and certainly not unique, but a great start to the day!! And the book is full of wee gems like that – basics that are around in lots of cookbooks, and in cook’s heads – but with a wholefood twist (soya milk in the pancakes, for instance). I’ve already got my beans ready to soak overnight for a French inspired salad tomorrow evening.
Sometimes I just come up a blank when I’m thinking about what meals to plan. Reading through my favourite recipe books always helps to stimulate my brain and offer up some favourites long since forgotten. I’m certain “Wholefood” will provide a regular source of stimulation to “heal … nourish … delight”.
